Lyrics
The world is spinning; I can’t close my eyes
The future’s glistening gaze is about to die
My lungs are filled with air, but I can’t breathe
The light is fading fast, though I cannot sleep
Through wistful days of darkness and distress
My soul will seek in You its peaceful rest
The faith I’ve felt for years begins to shake
The dreams before my eyes begin to fade
Among the sounds of sorrow and despair
I sit in silence waiting for a sign
To keep my hopes from sinking ever closer
To endless torment far below
Hear my cry, Lord Jesus!
Lord, hear my cry as I’m waiting, praying
Listening in silence
The world is spinning; I can’t close my eyes
This is the weakest moment of my whole life
Though strength is failing, I will surely see
The grace of God that rescues, will rescue me!
Alleluia!
In You, O Lord, I will find true peace.
About the Music
This a cappella choral work is the result of the times when we feel as if the world is spinning too fast, when we have no time to breathe, and when our prayers seem to go unanswered. Overcome is a delicate and emotional reflection, plea, and acceptance of life’s inner struggles and the Lord’s unending faith and grace.
Behind the Music
The simple melody of this piece was created at the piano in the aftermath of hearing some bad news. For some reason, however, I never wrote it down or tried developing it — it stayed in my brain and came out every once in a while when I was at the piano. It wasn’t until about a year later that I finally needed to get it out. I was going through a difficult time in my life, and there were moments that I felt completely helpless. Restless. Unable to sleep. So the music came out, and from the music, the words. I chose the title Overcome because of the multiple ways in which it can be applied to the meaning of the song: As an adjective (feeling overcome with emotion), or as a verb (striving to overcome, or acknowledging what has been overcome).
